Does Graham have chainmail?
If so, dos he know the easy way to polish it?

| Dear all No Tedi, Graham does not have chainmail - I think it was a later invention than Viking. They spend a long time trying to be historically accurate...in fact the guy who comes round checking these things is the bane of his life! Graham spent two years (!) creating a really rather beautiful carved cart telling the history of the Vikings at Chester, and the wheel fell off during a show. In need of urgent repair, he screwed it back on - and this guy spotted the metal screw - and told him it was historically inaccurate (the Vikings did not use metal screws etc.) - so when he got home he had to replace it with the correct wooden peg.... I'm typing this at work, waiting for my boss to come in and tell me when we're going to be made redundant. It's a very strange feeling, even though I've been expecting it for a while. I don't know quite what I'm going to do. Still, I daresay God will have something up His sleeve even if I can't see what it could possibly be! Having struggled so hard to get back to work, it seems a bit ironic really that half of my hours are now being taken away again. Especially now while things at church are "on hold" for six months too. I know that eventually things will work themselves out - life has a habit of doing so, especially when God is so closely involved, but I wouldn't mind at all if you joined me in asking Him to make the path over the next few months just a little clearer.... Dear Lesley
When you have been so active and under so much pressure, it must be very difficult to have space and relaxation time. I hope you can find ways of making use of it in a satisfying and fulfilling way.
There are very few people posting on the forum these days, but there are still large numbers reading the posts - I see someone was reading your thread around 3.30 this morning. Probably many, like me, don't log in until they have something to say, but regularly have a look. I guess there are many prayers said for you every day.

If Graham had made his screw of wood then he would have been okay.
The first documentation of the screw principle that survives is by Archimedes.
Meanwhile, the segmented armour so beloved of re-enactment Romans REPLACED the chainmail previously used by the Marian armies of the Republic because it was so much cheaper and easier to make. Chainmail continued to be used by Centurians, often as scale armour - i.e. leaves of iron sewn onto the underlying chain.
In chapter 82 of Haralds saga Sigurðarsonar, the author relates that on the day of the battle at Stamford Bridge, it was a day with hot sunshine, and the Norwegians left their mail shirts behind, on board ship.
The plebian Viking byrnies were more often boiled leather but headmen and chieftains also used Chain or ringmail as shown on the Bayeux tapestry ... that is, rings of metal sewn onto leather or cloth but not interlinked.... However, if I were sailing out of sit of land without a life jacket I know which I'd choose ... iron is not renowned for its flotation properties.
I take it your expert does not allow winged nor horned helmets

| Dear Tedi, It's the leather that I know about - because Graham is a lowly freeman. He's a carpenter in their society, but owns his own knife and coin (given to him when he was freed from slavery). Having said that - no horned helmets!  He does own a neat metal one, though. as for being a "lowly carpenter" ... no such thing ... a carpenter is a skilled elite in that society.
Wood doesn't grow on trees ... not in those climes, you know.

You, of course, are unable to carry any weapon ... even a fruit knife.
...eating tools may not be taken away by the females nor thralls.
